Building a Consortium for Social Movements and Education

Rebecca Tarlau, Ph.D., and John Holst, Ph.D., organized an internal speaker series with 17 Penn State faculty and two independent researchers to present about social movement research and practice as well as facilitate exploration of themes through an education lens. Currently, the consortium is collaborating with faculty members from the College of Education, College of the Liberal Arts, College of Agricultural Science, College of Communications, and College of Earth and Mineral Sciences.

The Center is committed to supporting the consortium, particularly in its goal of advancing research on social justice through the practice of social movements. In the midst of a global pandemic that impacts Black and Brown communities disproportionately and the global response to the murder of George Floyd, planning is underway for a series of events in 2020–2021 with a theme of Social Movements, Racial Justice, and Anti-racist Education. Additional collaborations will involve developing resources and facilitating interactive educational spaces between Philadelphia-based movements and beyond.
