Philadelphia as Social Laboratory incorporated walking tours of Philadelphia neighborhoods as a vehicle for examining systems of inequality, particularly as they play out through neighborhood change, race and ethnic relations, and representation. Observing the effects of urban growth and inequality helped students tease apart the complex meanings and experiences of gentrification. The course also introduced students to community leaders and organizations working to effect change in various arenas of urban life including education, housing, immigrant rights, and public arts projects.
