Abigail Akande, Ph.D., received a seed grant to design a Penn State Abington course for rehabilitation and human services students to develop greater awareness and understanding of the immigrant experience in Philadelphia, particularly in undocumented communities that face a large number of challenges related to access to education, health services, and employment.
International students account for nearly one quarter of Penn State Abington’s class of 2021, which creates a unique opportunity to engage students who may be more inclined to empathize with immigrant residents of Philadelphia. This course aims to increase students’ knowledge of social service agencies in Philadelphia for current and future exploratory experiences.
