Funded by a National Academy of Education/Spencer Postdoctoral Fellowship, Rebecca Tarlau, Ph.D., conducted research on the national teacher movement that has been erupting throughout the country since February 2018.

The seed grant ensured the presence of teacher leaders from significant national campaigns at a three-day national conference in Philadelphia, which enriched the dialogue and leadership development among Philadelphia educators.

This research offered insights into the experiences of teacher organizers across the country and the challenges facing teachers in the Philadelphia public school system as they are learning to transform their own union to take on broader social justice campaigns.

Dr. Tarlau was the 2020 recipient of Penn State’s Emerging Faculty Outreach Award.
