Assistant Professor, Art Education

Aaron Knochel, Ph.D., and graduate students in art education partnered with Horace Howard Furness High School to deliver an intensive summer camp inspired by the Philadelphia tradition of historical monuments and community-driven murals. The summer camp introduced high school students to conversations about what public space is, who it is for, and how it expresses the identities of different communities.

Through pedagogical methods of arts inquiry, community dialogue, and asset mapping, the participants were challenged to create proposals for public monuments derived from their personal experiences using 3D printing technologies in a makerspace setting.
